Can You Use an eSIM Without a Physical SIM

Some phones, including recent iPhones sold in the United States, ship without any physical SIM slot and rely entirely on eSIM.

A phone with eSIM can absolutely operate with no physical card at all.

  1. Download your home carrier’s profile as an eSIM to replace the plastic card entirely.
  2. Add travel eSIMs alongside it and switch between profiles in settings.
  3. If your home carrier does not support eSIM, you may still need a physical card for that number.
  4. Dual-eSIM phones let you run two digital profiles at once with no plastic involved.
  5. Going fully digital also means no tiny card to lose at the bottom of a bag.
  6. If you change phones, an eSIM transfers more cleanly than a physical card.
  7. Some carriers even let you move an eSIM between phones without requesting a new QR code.

For most modern phones, the physical SIM is already optional, and going fully digital is a realistic, convenient choice.

For a modern phone, the era of the plastic SIM is already ending.
